The Demand for Instructors is growing...and GROWING!!!

In today’s fast moving society it is essential to be able to drive. The number of lessons taken by each learner to pass the driving test is increasing year on year.

Happy to be a Driving Instructor

One study showed that those who passed the test had an average of 67 hours of driving experience compared with 49 hours twenty years ago. Therefore demand for driving lessons and professionally qualified instructors is growing rapidly with many instructors having waiting lists. (On average learners in Britain take more than 50 hours of lessons and spend more than £1500 to get their licence).

In addition, every week there seems to be another story in the press, Internet or on TV about what the Government is planning to do to improve road safety. Whether it is altering the age for young people to start driving, re-testing older drivers or retraining those who choose to drive dangerously, there seems no end to the changes planned.

The Government may wish to do all of these things. However, they cannot action any changes without the crucial work of the driver training industry. This is what makes it such an exciting time to become a Driving Instructor.

Great earnings potential

Once qualified as a Driving Instructor you will have a range of attractive career options available to you. In making your decision you will need to look at the potential earnings available which is based on the number of pupils you train, how much you charge minus the cost of your franchise fee and expenses i.e. petrol, insurance etc.

Your hard work is reflected directly into your earnings

The vast majority of driving instructors in the UK are self employed and as such you can choose the level of work and therefore reward you wish to achieve.

Freedom to work the hours you choose

Being a Driving Instructor allows a great deal of flexibility in the hours you work. You might choose to work around family or social commitments or even work part time – the choice is yours!

No previous experience or qualifications are required

The DSA (Driving Standards Agency) require that anyone wishing to train as a Driving Instructor has no more than 6 penalty points on there licence, have held a valid full UK licence for at least 3.5 years and meet the physical criteria required to safely control a vehicle. All you need is a willingness to learn as all the training you require is provided as part of the course.

A career open to all

1stdrive

Other than the legal restrictions outlined above the driver training industry actively seeks a diverse selection of instructors to reflect the ethnic, gender and cultural mix of the UK. We are not an industry that seeks to exclude on the basis of age or previous job experience, as you will see from our 1st Drive Instructor Testimonials!

Job satisfaction

Most of us can remember the elation we felt at passing our driving test. What is often forgotten is the satisfaction the instructor also gains from each successful pupil he or she trains. To know that you have been key to training someone in a new life changing skill is incredibly uplifting and makes teaching pupils such a rewarding career.

Great career opportunities once qualified

Most instructors, upon qualification choose to work in a driving school or set up on their own. However through continuing professional development there are many options including becoming an Instructor Trainer, training existing drivers to a higher standard such as the police or fleet training.
